Work try-out

  • Service
  • Nationwide except the Åland Islands
  • Public service

During a work try-out, you can learn about working life, different job tasks and professional fields and get help with suitability assessment. A work try-out will help you clarify your career plans. It can also be used to help you return to work after a long break. You are eligible for a work try-out, e.g. if:

  • You have no vocational education.
  • You need to change fields either for health reasons or due to a structural change in the labour market.
  • You have been out of work for a long time either due to prolonged unemployment or e.g. due to family leaves.
  • You are considering becoming an entrepreneur and want to explore your interest in and suitability for running your own business.

A work try-out can be related to the career field you want to pursue or to a field you are not familiar with yet. In this case, it can be arranged in workshops where you can try out different types of tasks.

A work try-out is not employment, and you will receive the same benefits as when you are unemployed. If you have agreed to a work try-out in your employment plan or a plan replacing it, your unemployment benefit can be increased. This will be decided by the party paying the unemployment benefit – that is, by the unemployment fund or Kela.

You may apply for an expense allowance for the duration of the work try-out. If you do not receive it from the payer of the unemployment benefit, the TE Office can pay a discretionary expense allowance.

The TE Office, trainee and organiser of the work try-out will agree on the duration of the work try-out (up to 6 months), working days (1-5 days) and daily working hours (4-8 h) taking into account the trainee’s objectives for the work try-out.

A work try-out does not require unemployment of any duration. You can have a work try-out if you are a job-seeker registered with a TE Office or a user of the vocational guidance services. Also, your vocational training or level of education will not affect the organisation of the work try-out. If you have no vocational training, the work try-out will be mainly aimed at finding a suitable education or training option.

A work try-out may be organised by a company, entrepreneur, municipality, joint municipal authority, other corporation, foundation or government agency or institution. A private individual may not act as the organiser of a work try-out. A workshop may organise a work try-out when it can provide it in a genuine work environment.

Do the following

If you want to explore your interest in and suitability for a certain position or profession, please contact the TE Office through the E-Services or discuss the matter with your dedicated expert or the TE Office’s psychologist who will provide you with guidance. You can find a work try-out place yourself; for tips, go to the E-Services.

If you are a job seeker at the TE Office, the work try-out will be agreed on in your employment plan drawn up with you (or in a plan replacing it) so that the unemployed job-seeker can be paid increased unemployment benefit for the duration of the work try-out, for up to 200 days. A replacing plan can be an activation plan, integration plan or multi-sectoral employment plan. A work try-out may be organised even though it has not been agreed on in the plan, but the trainee does not then have the right to increased unemployment benefit.

To whom and on what terms

At the work try-out, you will be assigned tasks that are new to you. A work try-out may only be provided for a profession or position you have worked in before if you have been outside the labour market for a long time. In this case, the work try-out is used to support return to work. A work try-out can for example be organised for recent graduates to gain work experience in their own field.

The service is free of charge.
