Work try-out

  • Public service

The City of Tampere is responsible for offering this service to persons whose municipality of residence is Tampere and who belong to the target group of local government employment pilot projects. Tampere is also responsible for the service for immigrants of Pirkanmaa who are in the process of integration. Exceptionally, within the Pirkanmaa municipalities, the service does not apply to immigrants in Kuhmoinen who are in the process of integration.

The target group for these pilots includes unemployed job seekers, subsidized persons in employment and job seekers in services promoting employment,

1) who are not entitled to an earnings related daily allowance, or

2) who are under 30 years of age, immigrants or foreign language speakers.

The local government pilots on promoting employment have been enacted by law (Act 1269/2020).

The work try-out scheme enables you to familiarise yourself with the world of work, different jobs and professions, as well as identify your own suitability for different jobs. The aim of work try-out is to clarify your career plans. It can also support your return to the labour market after a long absence. You can take part in a job try-out, if

  • you lack vocational education or training
  • a change of sector is necessary either for health reasons or due to structural changes in the labour market
  • you have been out of the labour market for a long time, either because of prolonged unemployment or e.g. due to family leave
  • you are considering entrepreneurship and would like to explore your interest and suitability to become an entrepreneur

Work try-out may be connected to the field you are considering or if you do not yet know what your future field may be. In such cases it is possible to organise a work try-out e.g. in workshops. Work try-out is not employment and there are no costs for the organiser.

During work try-out you will receive the same benefits as if you were unemployed. If you have agreed on a work try-out in the employment plan or in a replacement plan, you may receive your unemployment benefit at a higher rate.

You may receive reimbursement of expenses for service for the days when you participate.

The duration of a work try-out varies, but may not exceed six months. There are between one and five workdays per week and the daily working hours are between 4 to 8 hours. The times will be agreed together with the City of Tampere Employment and Growth Services, the participant in the work try-out and the organiser of the trial.

Do the following

If you wish to use a work try-out to determine your interest and suitability for a particular job or occupation, contact your personal counsellor or the psychologist at the City of Tampere Employment and Growth Services who will give you guidance. You can also send a contact request to an expert via the E service for personal customers. You may procure a work try-out placement yourself. You can also obtain tips on jobs in the E services for personal customers.

The work try-out will be agreed with you in the employment plan or replacement plan. Unemployed job seekers may receive unemployment benefit at a higher rate for the duration of the work try-out. The increased unemployment benefit can be paid for a maximum of 200 days.

Replacement plans include an activation plan, integration plan, and a cross-sectoral employment plan.

To whom and on what terms

The work try-out is implemented with tasks that are new to you. However, if you have been out of the labour force for a long period of time, it may be possible to organise a work try-out in an occupation or tasks you have previously carried out. The question then is about supporting your return to work through a work try-out. A work try-out cannot, however, be organised for recent graduates to gain work experience in their own field.

The work try-out scheme may be organised by a company, a private entrepreneur, a municipality, a federation of municipalities, another organisation, a foundation, a government agency or an institution. A private person cannot act as organiser of a work try-out measure.
