The Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) organises the collection and transport of mixed and organic waste and some packaging waste from residential buildings, public services and private health and education services in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area (Espoo, Helsinki, Kauniainen, Vantaa) and in Kirkkonummi. Following waste management regulations and other legislation, businesses and organisations take care of the identification, sorting and storage as well as the organisation of transport and processing of waste and toxic waste created in their operation.

Further information about waste management and waste sorting is available on the HSY website and from customer service, tel. +358 9 1561 2110.

Background information

Under the Waste Act, all waste producers must treat their waste in a proper manner. It is also laid down in the act that as much as possible of the waste must be sorted and recycled or otherwise recovered.

Municipalities are responsible for organising the management of the municipal waste generated by households. The collection and transport of the waste is partially the task of waste carriers. However, there is also waste that people must themselves take to regional collection or reception points. Collection and reception points are provided for different types of waste. Municipalities must also organise the reception and treatment of hazardous waste.

Regional reception of certain types of waste (such as electrical and electronic waste, batteries, packaging waste, waste paper and vehicle tyres) is the responsibility of the manufacturers and importers. They must provide reception points where people can take the waste.
