Gerontological social work, i.e. social work and social guidance for the elderly, is about change with the objective of improving the conditions, functional abilities, and reliability of communities that promote well-being among the elderly. The work takes place with the client and their network.

Gerontological social work is divided into social work, social guidance, informal care home-help services, and services at activity centres.

Clientship with the gerontological social work is established based on a service needs evaluation conducted by Senior Info. The services at the informal care activity centres are open to all and do not require a referral.

Senior info, tel. 09 3104 4556, Mon-Fri 9:00-15:00.

The work of gerontological social workers focuses especially on work with clients in difficult situations and in need of special support.

Gerontological social guidance consists of systematic client work carried out by social counsellors for the purpose of finding means and solutions for supporting the clients’ independence and coping with everyday life.

The informal care home-help service is a discretionary form of support that is focused on the informal carer. The service allows for the informal carer to have time to manage their own affairs and have a break. During the absence of the informal carer, the main duty of home help is to provide the care receiver with safe and stimulating interaction.

The regional informal care activity centres provide their services to informal care families in the form of regular statutory training courses, group activities, peer support, expert services and diverse recreational activities. The objective is to support the well-being of informal care families.

They guide older persons in accessing the services and explain what the preconditions for using the services are. If necessary, counselling on applying for different financial support forms and their coordination is also available.

An older person can obtain counselling for example on telephone or by visiting a service point. Service advisers can make decisions related to the services.
