Social guidance for the intellectually disabled

The objective of the service is to support the independence of the intellectually disabled person and the life management skills of the whole family.

The service is mainly for adults living in their own flat.

The service includes giving guidance for the customer in daily activities (e.g. cooking, housework, health care and running errands)and organising other services for the client.

As social guidance can also be sexual counselling, therapy or sexual education in matters concerning sexuality, the human body, feelings or relationships.

The service is applied for from the social worker of Developmental Disabilities Services at the social work unit of the customer's own residential area. A written application is not required.

The services are free of charge for the customers.

The customer and, if necessary, the whole family will work together with the social instructor to compile a guidance plan.

To whom and on what terms

A social worker from the Developmental Disabilities Services assesses the service needs with the customer and the customer's network. The customer will provide the basic information of the state of his or her health, everyday skills, rehabilitations suggestions, etc.

The service is only for citizens of Helsinki.
