Screening examinations are organised for different types of cancer according to the national screening programme. The service is mainly purchased. You will receive an invitation for cancer screenings at your home address. The maternity clinic will provide you with a referral for screening during pregnancy.

Do the following

If you are in the screening group, you will be invited to the cancer screening via mail. The invitation includes specific instructions regarding participating the screening.

If you have a non-disclosure for personal safety, the invitation cannot be sent to your home address. In that case, you must contact the service provider.

An expectant mother will get a referral and instructions for making an appointment for statutory antenatal screenings from the maternity clinic.

Taking part in screenings is voluntary and free of charge.

Background information

Screening tests are organised to detect certain diseases and abnormalities at the earliest possible stage. All women between the ages of 50 and 69 are invited to breast cancer screenings every 20–26 months. All women between the ages of 30 and 65 are invited to cervical cancer screenings every five years. From 2022 onwards, people between the ages of 60 and 68 will be invited to bowel cancer screenings. This screening programme will be gradually expanded to include those aged between 56 and 74 by 2031. Pregnant women are offered general early pregnancy ultrasound scans as well as examinations that focus on foetal chromosomal and structural abnormalities.

Participation in the screening tests is voluntary and free of charge. The decision to participate or not will not affect the person’s access to other health care services. Participants must be provided with adequate information on the effects and possible risks of the screening tests.
