Reservation of an area as a nature reserve

  • Service
  • Nationwide except the Åland Islands
  • Public service

The land owner can propose an area (an estate or a parcel thereof) to be protected as a part of the METSO Programme or to promote voluntary mire conservation. Alternatively, the establishment of a nature reserve can begin on the initiative of the ELY Centre for the implementation of a nature conservation programme or land use.

If the area fulfils the protection criteria and a compensation (private protected area) or a possible property sale (the ownership of nature reserve is acquired by the state) is agreed the area (either the whole property or a parcel thereof) will be established as a nature reserve. The final result is the decision establishing a nature reserve.
