Background information

If your health or functional capacity has deteriorated with age, you may undergo an elderly person’s health examination at a health and social services centre. The health examination for elderly people includes a basic health examination. It can also include an assessment of the elderly person’s memory, mental health, functional capacity and ability to cope independently at home.

The doctor performing the examination can refer the patient to a service need assessment if they determine that the person requires support for living at home or care outside the home. Social welfare service experts work together with the elderly person and their family and friends to establish the ways in which the necessary services can be organised.
