Psychologist services by the maternity clinic

  • Service
  • Helsinki
  • Public service

The purpose of work by a maternity clinic psychologist is to support parenthood and the child's development and to observe any potential problems with the child or the family at as early a stage as possible and to organise the necessary support, together with other operators.

Short support discussions are available for customers of the maternity clinic and mothers, who have just given birth, concerning parenthood and mild postpartum depression.

Referring a child to a psychologist is possible when the parents require guidance or advice concerning problems of understanding the developmental stages of the child, it is necessary to find out the child's developmental level or possible developmental problems, a statement from a psychologist is necessary for the child's rehabilitation plan or when a child's referral to a special treatment examination, either in a psychiatric or neurology unit for children, is considered.

The work methods of psychologists include customer meetings at the office, counselling by phone, psychological examinations for children, consultations with other professionals and co-operation with the customers. The psychologists work regionally at the health care stations. Psychology services are available in the eastern, northern and south-western service districts.

The services are free of charge for the customers.

To whom and on what terms

The psychology services of maternity clinics are intended for the customers of maternity and children's clinics, when the support from basic services (for example, maternity clinic) is not enough. The families are, mainly, sent to the psychologist through a referral, which is given by a doctor, public nurse at the clinic, speech or functional therapist or a district specialist nursery teacher. The customer can also request a service needs assessment and referral through the phone counselling of the customer's service area.

The service is only for citizens of Helsinki.

The service is free of charge.
