The hospital in Turku has been in operation since 1911, and it is the only unit of Prisoners’ Health Care on call twenty-four hours a day, all year round. There are 40 patient beds in the Turku unit, and 14 in the Vantaa unit. The duration of treatment varies from a few days to a few weeks or months.

In addition to voluntary and involuntary periods of treatment, the services include forensic psychiatry examinations and outpatient consultations. Observation periods are offered for demanding ADHD diagnostics, mental health examinations, statutory risk assessment for violence, start of opioid substitution therapy and the assessment periods of medically assisted treatment of sexual criminals. Doctors of the Psychiatric Hospital for Prisoners also offer outpatient services for nearby prisons. There are six doctors and three psychologists in the unit. In addition, there are special workers, nurses and auxiliary personnel. The Psychiatric Hospital for Prisoners also conducts research and development work.

The healthcare services are intended for prisoners and prisoners on remand.

Those serving a community sanction offence belong to the scope of municipal health services.
