Nature conservation in Helsinki is based on the Nature Conservation Act (1996). The main goal of nature conservation in the city is to maintain biodiversity.

Helsinki's means of nature conservation include protection of nature reserves, natural monuments, habitats and species.

The City environment sector's Environment services prepares proposals for the protection of nature reserves as well as maintenance and usage plans that are ratified by the Uusimaa Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment. The protection of natural monuments is decided upon by the City environment committee's environment and permits sub-committeee.
