Exceptional permits under the Fishing Act

The Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre) may, for justified reasons, grant an exceptional permit for

  • using a prohibited way of fishing or catching method or using or storage of prohibited fishing equipment;
  • fishing during a prohibited time;
  • taking catch larger than allowed;
  • using more fishing gear than allowed;
  • catching and taking fish ordered ...

Complete the printable form or draw up a free-form application (forms are not available for all exceptional permits) and send it as an attachment to the general online form to the registry of the ELY Centre. You can also send the completed form or free-form application by post. The return addresses are provided in the application forms.

To whom and on what terms

An exceptional permit may be granted for transplantation, fish farming activity, research, maintaining a fishing tradition, implementation or utilisation of fishery obligations or other purpose related to the management of fish resources.

A permit is not be granted if it were to compromise the purpose of a restriction issued in or under the Fishing Act or meeting the objectives of the fishing area’s management plan.

A temporary exceptional permit concerning provisions on waters containing migratory fish, if it is necessary for securing public fishery interests or for another particular reason and this does not endanger the passage of fish in the waters or the implementation of the management plan.


Deadline

The permit should be applied for in sufficient time before it is needed.

Processing time

The permit application is processed within 6 to 8 weeks after it has been received. A decisions usually involves a request for a statement or a public notice, which takes time.

Period of validity

The licence will be valid for a maximum of five years.
