Import notification for research and development of foreign genetic resources

If you import biological material (plant, animal, microbial) and/or associated traditional knowledge to Finland from abroad for research and/or development purposes and the research/development is targeted at genes or metabolites, you may need to notify the Finnish authorities (Finnish Environment Institute/Natural Resources Institute Finland) via the genetic resource registry.

Do the following

Make the notification via the genetic resource registry. The processing time of the notifications vary from a couple of days to a week.

To whom and on what terms

The obligation applies to use of genetic resources and/or traditional knowledge that are covered by the Nagoya Protocol and that are

  • acquired on 12 October 2014 or later (during the Protocol’s period of validity).
  • from a country that has ratified/acceded the Nagoya Protocol, that requires prior informed consent (PIC) and that has access legislation in place.

Processing time

Processing time is approximately one week.

Period of validity

Notification will stay at the register.
