  • Public service

Persons left without a job have the right to receive a health examination free of charge. The service is meant for the unemployed, and the health check is carried out by a public health nurse. The goal with your health check-up is to promote your state of health and your wellbeing, as well as to improve your working and functional ability while you are unemployed. The health check will give you a comprehensive overview of your state of health.

Health checks are booked by contacting a public health nurse. You may also be directed to a health check by an employee in social and health care or employment services.

It is advised you have a health check within three months from the beginning of your unemployment.

Background information

An unemployed person is entitled to have a health check. If you would like to have a health check, you should contact the health centre. The check usually includes measurements to establish your weight index and blood pressure, and certain laboratory tests. A discussion on your health, mental health, functional capacity, lifestyle and any symptoms is an important part of the check. In the health check of an unemployed person, special attention is focused on aspects that could affect their life management and work ability.

The professional carrying out the health check can provide advice on a suitable diet, exercise and self-management. If a need for further tests or treatment comes up as a result of the health check, they will refer you to the appropriate services. Any needs for rehabilitation that will help you improve or recover your work ability can also be established in the health check.
