Establishing and confirming paternity

  • Service
  • Turku
  • Public service

The paternity of a child to be born to a single mother, or a mother in a common-law marriage is established by the child welfare supervisor.

Should the parents marry after the child is born, and paternity has not yet been acknowledged, it must always be acknowledged, however. Otherwise, the child will not officially have a father.

The husband of the mother is the father of a child born in wedlock. If the husband is not the biological father of the child, the biological father may acknowledge the child at the child welfare supervisor's office. In this case, both the mother and her husband must accept acknowledgment of paternity.

The child welfare supervisor determines paternity, and receives acknowledgment of paternity. If the man does not voluntarily acknowledge the child, the child welfare supervisor will take the case to district court, which will begin legal proceedings to establish paternity.
