Only patients recently diagnosed with diabetes who require insulin therapy are treated as emergency cases (during office hours on weekdays) in specialist endocrinology care. The diagnostics of specialty diseases requires hormone measurements and, from time to time, various hormone stimulation tests. Imaging examinations (ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and isotope studies) are also often necessary.

The appointments for medical specialties take place in Helsinki University Hospital’s Abdominal Center at Meilahti Tower Hospital and at the Endocrinology Outpatient Clinics of the Jorvi and Peijas hospitals. All Helsinki University Hospital units also organize weight management groups for patients suffering from morbid obesity, and bariatric surgery for morbid obesity is carried out at Peijas Hospital in cooperation with surgeons. An endocrinologist also works in the hospitals of Hyvinkää and Lohja. As a rule, they are responsible for the examination and treatment of patients requiring specialist care in their respective hospital areas. The examination and treatment of specialty diseases follows the agreed division of work with other hospitals in the Helsinki University Hospital and the Uusimaa region, as well as with primary health care. A very large proportion of specialty diseases can be examined and treated in primary health care or by specialists in internal medicine in other hospitals. Treatment at our unit requires a physician’s referral.
