Customs clearance as a private person

  • Service
  • Nationwide
  • Public service

When receiving an uncleared consignment from outside the EU or within the EU's customs territory, but outside the fiscal territory of the EU or in the case of consignments between mainland Finland and the Åland Islands, you must usually submit a customs clearance for the consignment and pay for the possible import duties. If the consignment must be cleared through Customs, you will be notified usually by Posti or another courier company.

Select the suitable customs clearance method:

  • Clear your consignment online through the Import Declaration Service for private customers. The service is free of charge and always available. If you are unable to or do not wish to use the service, you can authorise another person to submit the online customs clearance on your behalf or use alternative methods to use our services.
  • Buy the customs clearance as a service from a forwarding company or Posti. Please contact your courier for instructions and more information.

Complete the customs clearance and pay possible duties within the time announced by the transport company. Otherwise, the courier will return your consignment to the sender.

Do the following

How to clear your goods through customs

  1. Declaring goods online

Log in the customs clearance service with online banking ID, a mobile certificate or a certificate card. If you cannot log in, you can authorise another person to declare the goods.

The customs clearance service includes user instructions.

Pay possible tariffs or duties by selecting online bank, card payment (Visa debit/credit and MasterCard debit/credit) or mobile payment.

After the customs clearance and payment of customs duties, your consignment will be transported forward. If your consignment is delivered by Posti, it will be delivered to you or a Posti pick-up point of your choosing.

If the consignment is handled by another transport company, follow the instructions of the company. If the transport company requires a decision on release after customs clearance, you can get it from the customs clearance service. If necessary, deliver it to the carrier so that the consignment can continue to be transported.

All consignments cannot be cleared in the Customs Import Declaration Service for private persons. Such consignments can be cleared with alternative means, in the Customs Clearance Service or bought as a clearance service from a forwarding company or Posti.

  1. Declaring goods at customs office

Customs clearance of postal items has been mainly transferred online.

Consignments carried by another transport company can be cleared at the closest customs office providing customer service. Check the opening times of the customs offices that provide customer service.

Take with you:

• reception note

• order confirmation, invoice or receipt

• ID and other documents that may be related to the consignment

Posti will deliver your consignment to you or to a Posti pick-up point of your choosing after you have cleared the consignment through customs and paid the import duties.

The transport company may transport to you the consignment only against a release decision of the customs clearance. Check if you have to deliver the release decision to the transport company from their arrival notification. You can obtain a release decision from the Customs Import Declaration Service for private persons.
