The purpose of a children’s home is to secure the rehabilitative and age-appropriate development of children and young people in institutional care and provide them with a safe growth environment.

Do the following

To whom and on what terms

Children of various ages live in children's home, when they, for one reason or another, cannot live at home with their parents. Cooperation with the social worker from the community care of child welfare services is required before the child can be placed into a children's home. The placement will be carried out when the support measures of community care are not sufficient in order to secure the safe growth and development of the child.

The service is only for citizens of Helsinki.

Background information

The care of an elderly or disabled person or a person in need of other special care and treatment may be arranged in an institution if this is justified for protecting their health and safety. Institutional care in a care home or other social welfare unit may be short-term or continuous in nature. It can be provided on a part-time or 24/7 basis.

The institutional care of a disabled person must be based on medical and social reasons and not, for example, on the abundance of services they need. The person’s own views must be taken into account in all aspects of the care.

Persons living in institutions must be provided with rehabilitation, treatment and care that meets their needs. Efforts must also be made to provide them with a safe, home-like and stimulating environment. A case worker is appointed for the client, and they are responsible for the implementation of the personalised care.

Institutional care is provided by both public and private service providers.
