Built heritage maintenance grant

  • Service
  • Nationwide except the Åland Islands
  • Public service

Built heritage maintenance grants can be granted for the maintenance and repair of cultural heritage sites and their immediate environment and for the preparation of special plans that support renovation. The grant scheme helps promote the conservation of built heritage and the enhancement of living environments.

Do the following

The application period is open once a year in the autumn. Check the schedule and read more about the objectives and terms of the grant on the ELY Centre’s website.

How to apply

Submit your grant applications primarily online in Local government e-service (available in Finnish and in Swedish). The e-service requires strong identification.

If you cannot use the online service form, you can use the printable form (available in Finnish and in Swedish). Send the form to the registry of the ELY Centre either electronically as an attachment to the general online form or by post. Choose the ELY Centre responsible for the area in which the site is located. Satakunta is an exception, as there applications are submitted to the ELY Centre for Southwest Finland, as well as Ostrobothnia and Central Ostrobothnia, where the delivery address is the ELY Centre for Southern Ostrobothnia.

Proving the right to use services

If aid is applied for an organisation, prepare to prove that you have the right to act on behalf of the applying organisation. If you use the Local government e-service, we recommend that you use the Suomi.fi e-Authorisations service. The authorisations can be easily changed if there are changes in personnel, for example. Authorisation concerning this aid is “Applying for discretionary government transfers for environmental purposes”. More information: Suomi.fi service.

If you have the sole right to sign for your organisation as defined in your organisation’s rules, you can submit an electronic application on your organisation’s behalf without any separate authorisation.

If you do not have the sole right to sign for your organisation and your organisation does not use the Suomi.fi e-Authorizations service, or if you apply for aid using a printed form, attach a power of attorney with your application.

The grant decision or information on the grant will be sent to the email address provided by the applicant.

Payment application

If your grant application is approved, you can request payment after the work has been duly completed. Development and Administrative Services Centre (KEHA Centre) of the ELY Centres and TE Offices is in charge of the payments.

Read the KEHA Centre’s payment instructions. Next, complete the payment application form.

To whom and on what terms

Private owners of buildings, communities promoting the maintenance of built heritage, municipalities and joint municipal authorities can apply for the grant.

You can apply for support in restoring and preserving a building or site. These include repairs to the roof, external walls, foundations, windows, doors or fireplaces. Grants can also be applied for the renovation of other buildings and the immediate surroundings of the building’s yard and for the preparation of special plans for renovation.

Read more about the terms on the ELY Centre’s website.
