Bird feeding instructions

The Environment services gives advice on how to feed birds correctly and states where feeding birds is prohibited in Helsinki.

The citizens can contact the Environment services if bird feeding causes any problems or if they have any questions concerning the feeding bans. The city, private landowners and housing companies have the right to forbid bird feeding in their areas.

The Environmental Health unit has renewed the 2006 decision on prohibited bird feeding areas in the City of Helsinki. According to the renewed decision, bird feeding is prohibited in ten areas.

Feeding birds is allowed in areas where it is not specifically prohibited, provided that the feeding will not cause undue harm. The risk of a pathogen transferring from a wild bird to a human is small throughout the year.
