In what circumstances do I need approval from a Regional State Administrative Agency?

You need approval to

  • collect or process animal semen or embryos,
  • produce embryos by means of in-vitro fertilisation, or
  • store semen or embryos, barring some excep ...

Do the following

Instructions 1, 2 and 4 applies for all approvals listed below

  1. Familiarise yourself with the legal requirements.
  2. Make sure that you have access to
  • a veterinarian at the stud farm and
  • other competent staff.

3. Send your application to the registry of your nearest Regional State

Administrative Agency.

Your application must include at least the following information:

  • contact information for yourself and your stud farm/

semen collection centre

  • your business ID
  • a description of your semen collection operation
  • evidence of compliance with the criteria for approval
  • written consent from the centre veterinarian
  • information about your staff’s competence and qualifications

In addition to instructions above Your application must include at least the following information:

  • contact information for the members of the team
  • contact information for the team’s place of work (especially in the case of production teams)
  • a description of the operation
  • evidence of compliance with the criteria for approval
  • information about your staff’s competence and qualifications
  • whether you are applying for domestic or international approval
  • layout of your premises showing the locations of key operations.

How do I seek approval for a semen storage centre?

In addition to instructions above

  • Make sure that you have access to
  • a designated veterinarian to prevent the spread of animal diseases and
  • enough other competent and experienced staff
  • written consent from the designated veterinarian
  • layout of your premises.

To whom and on what terms

What are the rules for storing embryos and semen of farm animals?

Embryos can be stored

  • on the premises of embryo production teams,
  • on the premises of embryo collection teams,
  • in approved semen collection centres, and
  • in approved semen storage centres.

You can only seek approval for an embryo production team if you already have an approved embryo collection team.

Semen can be stored

  • in approved semen collection centres, and
  • in approved semen storage centres, and
  • on the premises of approved embryo production teams.
  • In deviation from the above, semen and embryos can be stored on a farm in preparation for using them to artificially inseminate the farmer’s own animals.

You can also store semen in preparation for dispatching it to be used to inseminate horses in Finland.
