Disclosure of personal data from the Population Information System
You can prohibit the disclosure of your data from the Population Information System on the Suomi.fi Personal Data page. You can also remove the prohibition and allow your data to be disclosed.
On the personal data page, you can only prevent the disclosure of personal data kept in the Population Information System. You must separately prohibit the disclosure of your personal data to other registers. You should directly contact the controller of the register in question.
The public sector is an important party in maintaining and utilising the data in the Population Information System.
Your information will also be disclosed to companies and other private parties. Companies use data from the Population Information System to e.g. update their customer registers. As a rule, the utilisation of data requires a data permit issued by the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.
Data concerning your religious denomination is disclosed to the Tax Administration which means that you do not need to notify the Tax Administration when you resign from a religious community because the matter is automatically considered in the taxation. The taxation of the year is determined on the basis of the last day of the year preceding it
In addition to the Finnish Tax Administration, information on religious communities kept in the Population Information System is also disclosed for official purposes to the Police, Statistics Finland, Defence Command Finland, and a number of municipalities (religious education).
For a more detailed list of operators using data from the Population Information System, see the page Disclosure of data from the Population Information System (in Finnish).
On the Suomi.fi Personal Data page, you can add different kinds of prohibitions. Each prohibition prevents the disclosure of information for a specific purpose.
You can add prohibitions on:
- customer register updates
- direct marketing
- use as contact information
- compilation of public registers and
- genealogical research.
You cannot prohibit telemarketing by preventing the disclosure of your personal data from the Population Information System because the information kept in the Population Information System does not contain personal telephone numbers. Telemarketers get your phone number from other sources.
Even if you have prohibited the disclosure of your personal data, your details can be disclosed to the authorities and to such bodies as Statistics Finland for research purposes, and for research theses.
Information can also be disclosed for reports or research concerning public interest or the rights or interests of individuals.
You can submit your address information by submitting a notification of change of address in the joint service of the Digital and Population Data Services Agency and Posti. Your address information is updated in both the Population Information System and Posti’s address information system.
To view the list of organisations that receive information of your change of address from the Population Information System, visit the webpage Disclosing information from the Population Information System (in Finnish) of the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.
You can add a prohibition on customer register updates to prevent your address information from being disclosed from the Population Information System. Pursuant to legislation, data can be disclosed to authorities, educational institutions, insurance companies, recovery and Veikkaus Oy in-spite of a non-disclosure for customer register update.
You can use Posti’s Disclosure ban page to prevent the disclosure of information to organizations that are usually notified of your change of address by Posti. You can also view the list of organizations to which your address is automatically updated when you move.
If someone has used your data to submit a false notification of move or if you are afraid that this might happen, add a block on a notification of move for the Digital and Population Data Services Agency. You can add a block on the Digital and Population Data Services Agency in the Suomi.fi Personal Data service.
Add the same block for Posti as well. This way, you can ensure that no one is able to submit a false notification of move with your information through Posti, either. You can request the block on Posti’s online service.
