Self-assessment of fire safety

The aim of fire safety self-assessment is to help property owners, or those responsible for a property, to improve safety. Self-assessment helps you to improve the safety of your property and fix any deficiencies there might be.

The rescue services carry out planned checks of fire safety in residential properties in different years in different areas. On the basis of the self-assessment forms, the authorities get a general understanding of the safety of residential properties in the area you live in.

If you are the owner of a small property or are responsible for it, the rescue services can send you a self-assessment form. You must answer the questions on the form. Detached houses and other small houses have their own series of questions, flats and row houses have theirs. The questions cover such things as fire safety and routes in the building.

When you receive the form, you will also receive a home safety guide. It explains about fire and other safety issues. Read the guide carefully. After that, answer the questions sent by the authorities and send your answers back.

If you notice any deficiencies in the property, fix them yourself immediately.

On the basis of your answers, the authorities will decide whether they should carry out a fire inspection in your property. Follow-up actions could, for example, be related to checking documents. You and the other residents may also be given a guide so you know how to act correctly in case of an accident.

The fire authorities can carry out a fire inspection if you fail to complete and return the self-assessment form. The authorities can also carry out fire inspections on a spot check basis.
