When you have retired or are over the age of 65, you have the right to a diverse range of pensioners discounts. They vary in size, and there is no common practice in place. When purchasing travel tickets, entrance tickets or services, remember to ask whether you are eligible for a pensioner discount.
Discounts with a pensioner's card or a Kela card
As a pensioner, your will receive a discount on e.g. train and coach tickets. In order to be given a discount, you must usually prove that you are a pensioner or over the age of 65. The pensioner's card provided by your pension provider or an ID card for people over the age of 65 are usually sufficient for this purpose. As the recipient of a national pension, you can prove that you are a pensioner by showing a pensioners card provided by Kela.
Discounts and free-of-charge services
A pensioners' discount can range from a few per cent up to services that are completely free-of-charge. Tickets for cultural events are often less expensive for pensioners than other consumers. Some municipalities allow free-of-charge access to municipal swim halls and gyms for people over the age of 70. Hairdressers, barbers and other companies can offer pensioners discounts continuously or at certain times of day.
Many municipalities give free public transport tickets and a free parking permit to war veterans.
