Search help

Searches cover

  • the information at the Quality to the Web site
  • the associated links and files
  • news items produced by the Suomi.fi editorial team.

Searches go through text, headlines, descriptions, content keywords and the names of organisations producing information.

The search function is always at the top of each page.

Searches always cover content that is in the same language as the search word, for example, material in English is never shown in the results of a search in Finnish. You can always search for results in Finnish for the same search word by clicking the ‘Haitko suomenkielisia sivuja?’ link, or in Swedish by clicking the ‘Sökte du på svenska?’ link.

To conduct a search, enter the keyword or search word in the search field and click the Search button or press the Enter key. The search function follows the same principles as the most popular Internet search engines.

The quick search does not recognize operators (AND, OR, NOT). For the default search, the operator OR is added between the search words.

The search function is not case-sensitive, i.e. searches using ‘quality’, ‘Quality’ or ‘QUALITY’ all produce the same results.

A search term can be truncated with an asterisk (*). The asterisk is useful when searching for different forms of the same word or for compound words. The search term ‘criteria’ only produce results in which the word appears in exactly the same form. By truncating the search term thus, ‘crit*’, the search produces results containing all the words starting with those letters, e.g. criteria, criterion, critic, criticism.

You can also use several search terms. The search will return pages containing both words and pages containing either of the words, best matches first.

If you want to search for a specific phrase, put it in quotation marks (e.g. "quality criteria").

Search results

Once the search has been carried out, a list of documents returned will appear. The search results page will show 25 results at a time. If there are more, you can browse the search results pages by clicking on the page numbers or the Previous and Next links.

The search results page contains the following information:

  1. The search term(s) you used, at the top of the page, plus the number of hits returned.
  2. A total of 25 hits are shown on one page. You can browse the search results pages by clicking on the page numbers or the Previous and Next links.
  3. The first hits listed are pages and links at the Quality to the Web site. The search results include headline, description, location in site, link to web address and information about the responsible organisation.
  4. If you want to carry out a search in Finnish using the same search term(s), click the ‘Haitko suomenkielisia sivuja?’ link, or in Swedish, click the ‘Sökte du på svenska?’ link.

Searches only cover the information that is actually at the Quality to the Web site. If you do not find the information you are looking for:

  • Check that you have spelled the search term(s) correctly.
  • Reduce the number of search terms you are using.
  • Try truncating the search term(s) with an asterisk (*).

If you get too many hits, use more search terms or narrow the search by using other search criteria.
