An employment contract is an important contract. It is an agreement between the employer and employee on working and the salary paid for it.

Employment contracts are bound by laws and agreements between the labour market social partners. A salary cannot be lower than what is stated in the sector-specific collective agreement binding on the employer. If the sector does not have an agreement, the terms and conditions are governed by law.

Employers need the personal data of their employees in order to pay wages, insurances and so on. Collecting and processing this data is bound by laws on privacy protection.

Gender discrimination is prohibited in working life. Gender equality and improving it in working life are covered by the Act on Equality between Women and Men.

Agreements and salaries

A collective agreement is established when the employers' association and the trade union come to an agreement on terms and conditions. The terms and conditions of employees working in public sector posts are governed by the collective agreement for public servants. Collective agreements and collective agreements for public servants state the minimum conditions for salaries and other benefits. Individual employers can agree on benefits which are better than the ones stated in collective agreements.

Privacy protection

Privacy protection applies in working life just as in private life. Job seekers and employees have the right to decide how their personal data is processed and the right to be evaluated on the correct personal data. Gender equality in working life

The Act on Equality between Women and Men prohibits discrimination in working life based on sex. The employers' duty is to promote gender equality. All workplaces employing more than 30 people must compile a report on how gender equality has been implemented and a plan on how it will be promoted. The Ombudsman for Equality supervises gender equality in working life. In individual cases, courts make decisions on gender equality issues.
