Environmental protection prevents or reduces the damage caused by human activities and improves the state of the environment. The aim is also to preserve cultural environments. Nature conservation focuses on preserving biodiversity. Nature conservation areas and national parks aim to preserve the special features of the natural environment in Finland.
The state of the environment affects the health of all living beings. Human activities, housing, traffic, business and industry all have an impact on the environment. The state of the environment is monitored by research institutes, universities, and organisations in the sector in addition to authorities such as the environmental administration. The aim of environmental health care is to make sure that there are no factors harmful to health in the living environment.
Natural resources can be divided into renewable and non-renewable resources. Renewable resources include forests. The management of renewable natural resources aims to ensure the sustainable use and preservation of resources for future generations. Consumer habits and technological solutions have an impact on the sufficiency of natural resources.
Berries, mushrooms, fish and plants are available for everyone to use and generally with no danger of them dying out. Roughly every tenth animal and plant species in Finland is endangered, and keeping them alive calls for special measures.
