There is a law in Finland on the integration of immigrants. Its aim is to ensure that immigrants can take part in Finnish society and its activities in the same way as anyone else living in the country.
Immigrant advisors in Employment and Economic Development Offices and in local authorities support immigrants and their families in obtaining the necessary information and acquiring the skills to cope in society and working life. A profession or qualification gained elsewhere can be adjusted to meet the requirements of Finnish working life through further training or by recognising existing qualifications.
In addition to local authorities, many organisations and the national churches provide guidance for immigrants and provide help with integration. Learning Finnish or Swedish is an essential requirement for integration. Language teaching is organised in some bigger towns and cities for students at various levels.
Integration training for adults is mainly labour force training. This does not lead to any qualifications.
The European Fund for Refugees provides funds for various projects on asylum procedures, the reception of refugees and asylum seekers, and projects which promote integration and voluntary remigration. In Finland, the fund is managed by the Ministry of the Interior.
