Housing and construction

Finding a home

Before deciding on a place to live, it is worth looking into the advantages and disadvantages of different types of housing. The banks and authorities produce comparative data on the key aspects and costs of different types of housing. Housing expenditure consists of the cost of the apartment, maintenance costs and renovation costs. The method of financing also has an impact on the costs of housing.

Housing

A home will remain in good condition if it is well looked after. Problems with damp and mould can be prevented by taking good care of the premises and equipment and by making sure that there is sufficient ventilation. Maintaining flats, buildings and courtyards is the responsibility of the housing company, shareholders and residents. The distribution of responsibilities is defined in the Housing Companies Act and in the articles of association of the housing company.

Housing allowances

Society provides financial support to help with living expenses so that even those on small incomes, students and pensioners can live in homes of a reasonable standard. Applicants may receive housing allowance for part of their housing costs for rented accommodation, right-of-occupancy housing and even for owner-occupied housing. Allowances are granted collectively for the entire household, and are available on application from the Social Insurance Institution (KELA).

Construction and real estates

Building requires finding and acquiring a suitable plot of land and applying for the necessary permits. Permits are sometimes required when renovating, especially if significant changes are intended. Advice can also be sought from municipal building control authorities. In addition to banks, different funds or foundations may provide financing for renovations and building.

Population information

The national population information system contains population data and information on where people live. In addition to personal data, the system can also provide information on buildings, flats and real estate. The system is maintained by the local register offices and the Population Register Centre.
