Everyone has the right to health and medical care. Local authorities provide health services at health centres, maternity and child welfare clinics, at schools, rehabilitation clinics and dental clinics. It is the duty of local authorities to make sure that residents have access to care if they become ill. Everyone also has the right to municipal dental care, or health insurance compensation for private dental care. Employers arrange preventative occupational health care for their employees.
Sickness brings extra expense and changes in everyday life. Society supports the sick and those in need of rehabilitation. The local authorities' task is to produce preventative and rehabilitation services. They also distribute information on occupational wellbeing. Local authority social and health services, the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (KELA) and pension insurance institutions are responsible for rehabilitation.
Addictions caused by intoxicants and other substances lead to difficult social and societal problems. Different tests help establish whether an intoxicant has become a problem. Information on intoxicants and addictions is available from health centres, school nurses and drug and alcohol advice organisations. Local authorities arrange services for substance abusers together with support for abusers and their families. Municipal social welfare offices provide information on clinics and support.
Good nutritional habits maintain health and wellbeing. Nutritional recommendations can help in following a varied and healthy diet. The authorities monitor ingredients to make sure they are safe. Municipal health inspectors and food supervisors monitor the manufacture and distribution of foods.
