Pension cover abroad

Working abroad affects your pension. Pension cover for those working abroad is normally determined in accordance with the laws of the country concerned. There are also countries where there is no universal pension scheme in place. In these countries those working for a foreign employer can generally expect to receive no pension.

Employees sent abroad by a Finnish employer can remain covered under the Finnish social security system if they are working temporarily in an EU or EEA country, or one that has a social security agreement with Finland. The employer needs to acquire the proper certificate from the Finnish Centre for Pensions for this purpose. If an employee is transferred to a country that has no agreement with Finland, his or her pension accrues in Finland.
