Importing a vehicle

Vehicle tax needs to be paid on most vehicles before they are registered or start to be used. The tax is paid to Finnish Customs. If a vehicle is to be registered in Finland, it can be used for up to three months prior to the tax assessment decision. For this, a confirmation that the vehicle is in use is needed from Finnish Customs, a tax declaration form has to be submitted to them and the vehicle has to be properly insured.

Duty and VAT are levied on vehicles imported from outside the EU. Tax allowances may be available on vehicles entering the country as household effects, upon certain conditions. The Finnish Customs website gives details regarding how a vehicle is cleared through customs and what tax is due. The site also has tables and statistics on vehicle tax decisions and a calculator to help you work out how much tax you will have to pay.
