Traffic safety

All road users must follow traffic regulations and road signs. It is the duty of the police to monitor traffic and the observance of the regulations.

The weather has an impact on road safety. The Finnish Meteorological Institute issues warnings of severe driving conditions.

Safety appliances are used in vehicles, for example a seat belt is compulsory in a car. In large boats, the captain and passengers should wear life jackets.

A helmet is compulsory for motorcyclists and moped riders. Cyclists and any passengers should also use suitable protective helmets while riding. Pedestrians need a reflector during the hours of darkness.
