Border inspections

Border inspections refer to the inspections of persons, goods and vehicles and the questioning of travellers at border crossing points.  There are no actual border inspections in the Schengen area and the Schengen countries are involved in the joint control of the external border.

Travel documents in the Schengen area are not generally checked, although they must be carried. A travel document is a passport or an ID card issued by the police. You can cross the border between Nordic countries at any point if you have nothing to declare. In the Nordic countries someone’s identity can be established if necessary by means of a driving licence, for example.
