In practice, the public transport network in Finland takes people to all parts of the county.
VR, the state-owned railway company, takes care of rail traffic throughout the country. The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency maintains and develops the rail network and is responsible for railway safety. VR handles matters concerning trains and traffic. In Finland, large quantities of freight are carried by rail.
Bus and coach transport is handled by numerous private companies. Many towns and cities also have their own internal bus routes.
For example Sweden, Germany and Estonia can be reached from Finland, by sea. Destia runs ferry services for road users on lakes and in sea areas. Coastal service supply vessels link the archipelago and the mainland.
Finavia is responsible for Finland's airports and air traffic, while Finnish Transport Safety Agency Trafi is responsible for air traffic safety.
