Science and research

Knowledge and know-how are national targets for development in Finland. Increasing knowledge and know-how and utilising this contribute to economic growth, employment and wellbeing.

The Ministry of Education and Culture is responsible for science policy in Finland. Its aim is to develop a high-quality, effective and scientifically and socially significant system of research in Finland.

Scientific research in Finland is principally carried out at universities and state-funded specialised research institutes. The activities of each research institute are guided by the ministry in charge of that particular area.

Research is funded by the Academy of Finland, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation TEKES and many foundations in addition to universities and research institutes.
