The education system
The aim of educational policy is to offer everyone living in Finland an equal right to education. Everyone has the right to pre-school and basic education which is provided free of charge. The education which is available after basic education is also mainly free. Society supports study by providing financial aid for students.
Six-years-olds are entitled to pre-school education at schools or day care centres. Children usually start basic education at the age of seven; comprehensive schools provide general education for the entire age group. Basic education usually takes nine years to complete by which stage compulsory education has been completed.
