Institutions of higher education

The higher education system in Finland is divided into two areas, polytechnics and universities. Polytechnics (universities of applied sciences) emphasise the connection with the labour market and regional development. The qualifications taken at polytechnics are higher education qualifications with an emphasis on vocation. A polytechnic degree takes about four years to complete, and it prepares students for professional expert duties.

Universities provide education based on scientific research. They promote free research and scholarship in the arts and sciences. University students can complete a Bachelor's or Master's degree, study for a post-graduate degree, take continuing education courses and study at the Open University.
