Basic education

Basic education provides a general, all-round education in grades 1 to 9. Nationwide curriculum requirements are the responsibility of the Finnish National Board of Education.

The local authority is responsible for providing free basic education to children in its area who have reached the age of compulsory education. The government may also grant permission to a registered organisation, a foundation or the state to arrange basic education. Basic education is generally provided in comprehensive schools, although sometimes it may also be provided in other types of educational institutions.

The network of comprehensive schools covers the whole country. The education and teaching materials are free for pupils. Pupils also have a right to free transportation if they live more than five kilometres away from school.

Basic education is usually for nine years. Special needs education is provided for pupils requiring support for special needs in order to help them complete basic education. Special needs education can be provided for individuals, small groups or in conjunction with basic education.
