Border security
The purpose of border control is to maintain order and security at our borders and prevent and investigate unauthorised border crossings. The land border is patrolled traditionally. Technical surveillance systems are also employed. At our sea borders the basic structure of border control is formed of coast guard stations with their radar and camera systems. This surveillance is supplemented by patrolling ships and boats.
Border checks are performed at border crossing points. They are checks on persons - including their means of transport and the objects in their possession - carried out on those crossing the border. There is a particular focus on the external border of the Schengen area.
