Types of insurance

In the main, the insurance security that people in Finland have comprises insurances covered either wholly or partly by social security. This 'social insurance' includes many key insurances concerning people's wellbeing.

Society covers the costs incurred through illness, unemployment, accidents and pensions with social insurances. The employer and employee together are responsible for paying for these insurances.

Motor insurance is compulsory in Finland. It is required for all motor vehicles, caravans and trailers used in Finland.

In addition, everyone can take out private insurance to protect themselves and their family; these include life insurance, home insurance or private accident insurance.
