Non-military service

Instead of military service, men can choose to do non-military service. This includes training and work which benefits society. The place of service must have an agreement with the organiser, i.e. the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. Non-military service cannot be performed in one's existing place of employment. It must be applied for on the Ministry of Employment and the Economy's non-military service application form, which can then be submitted to the Call-up Board.

Total objection means refusing to perform either military or non-military service. Total objectors can make a written declaration of their objection or not report to their place of service. Under Finnish law, total objectors are sentenced to imprisonment.
