Radiation
Radiation is a natural part of the living environment. It is caused by radioactive substances and the sun, among other things.
As well as visible light, solar radiation contains infrared or heat radiation and ultraviolet or UV radiation. People's skin and eyes are sensitive to too much UV radiation. The Meteorological Institute monitors UV radiation and issues warnings about when and where you should take protection against the sun.
The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) monitors radioactivity in the environment and carries out relevant research. Natural and man-made radioactive substances both occur in nature. They can get into people's food and water or the air they breathe and affect their health.
