Protection of species

The aim of protecting species is to preserve indigenous and established species and maintain their viability. A species is considered endangered if its natural survival in Finland is in danger. Only about a third of Finland's organic species are known well enough to assess whether they are endangered.

An endangered species can be protected. Collecting and transplanting protected plants is forbidden. Protected animals may not be caught or killed.

Biotopes are common habitats for flora and fauna. Different biotopes are protected to retain biodiversity and preserve the habitats of individual species. Deciduous forests and coastal meadows are examples of protected biotopes.
