Residence permits

A residence permit is applied for on the basis of the individual’s status. For example, a foreigner who intends to be in paid employment in Finland must have a residence permit for an employed person and a person engaged in independent business or practising a profession must have a residence permit for a self-employed person.

The application for a residence permit should be submitted to a Finnish diplomatic representation abroad or to the local police in Finland. Both will provide the necessary documents and further information. Decisions regarding residence permits are made by the Finnish Immigration Service. The first residence permit is always temporary.

Citizens of Nordic Countries or EU or EEA Member States do not require a residence permit.
