Presidential elections
The President of Finland is elected in a direct national election for a six-year term. The President is elected in a two-stage election, if necessary and can be elected for a maximum of two terms. If one of the candidates gains more than half the votes in the first round, he or she is elected. If this is not the case, a second round is organised. The two candidates who gained most votes in the first round participate in the second round. The candidate who gains more votes is elected as President. Parties and constituency associations can nominate presidential candidates.
