Local government elections
In local government elections, councillors are elected to local authority councils for four years at a time. In addition to Finnish citizens, foreigners who live in Finland permanently can also vote in local government elections. People can only vote in the local government elections of their area of residence. The election results are counted separately in each local authority.
The number of councillors depends on the population of the municipality. Parties and constituency associations can nominate candidates. A minimum of 10 people who are entitled to vote are required to set up a constituency association. People can stand as candidates in their area of residence.
