Voting and civic activity

Everyone aged 18 or over can vote in national and local elections. The right to vote is universal and equal. People can vote on election day or in advance. Elections are confidential: no one is allowed to know how voters have cast their vote. In elections, political parties and a specific number of people who are entitled to vote can nominate candidates.

National and local referendums can also be held. The results of Finnish referendums are advisory by nature and they have no legally binding status.

In addition to voting, ordinary people can also make their influence felt in many non-governmental organisations, by participating in social debate and following decision-making.
