Nationality

A foreigner can become a Finnish citizen on application if they fulfil the conditions laid down for nationality. Nationality is granted as a matter of discretion.

Finnish citizens do not lose their nationality if they become citizens of another state. Likewise, foreigners need not give up their existing nationality when they become Finnish citizens. People with multiple nationality can, however, lose their Finnish nationality at the age of 22 if they do not have sufficient ties with Finland.

Children born abroad become Finnish citizens automatically if their mother is Finnish. If only their father is Finnish, the child becomes a Finnish citizen if the parents are married or from the moment the parents are married. If paternity is established after this point, the child will acquire Finnish citizenship as of the date on which paternity is established.
