Nationality, languages and minorities

Finnish citizenship can be gained either automatically or on application under certain conditions. Finland also accepts dual nationality, which means that Finns will not lose their nationality if they become citizens of another state. Likewise, foreigners need not give up their existing nationality when they become Finnish citizens.

Language minorities in Finland are the Swedish-speaking Finns, the Sámi people, the Romani and people using sign language as their mother tongue.

The Minority Ombudsman monitors and promotes the interests of ethnic minorities in Finland. They can take initiatives on grievances concerning the position of foreigners. A victim of discrimination can turn to the Minority Ombudsman.
